IT professionals likely to hack their own organisations - BLACKMORE RICOTECH

IT professionals likely to hack their own organisations

14th March 2016

A survey conducted by Absolute Software reveals that younger IT professionals demonstrate more “cavalier” behaviour when it comes to information security, according to HelpNet Security.

According to the survey, 41% of staff aged 18-44 were most likely to hack their own organisation, while only 12% would over the age of 44.

Other worrying statistics show that respondents in general were prone to risky behaviour:

  • 45% of all respondents knowingly circumvented organisational security policies.
  • 33% of all respondents have successfully hacked their organisation.

CONFIDENT OR COMPLACENT?

The survey also highlighted a trend among IT professionals that indicates younger staff are variably more confident or more complacent on some topics:

  • 92% aged 18-44 were confident that they could contain a data breach (79% of 45+);
  • 89% were comfortable with staffing levels for effective IT and data security (75% of 45+).

CARRYING THE LOAD ALONE?

Moreover, it seems that respondents felt they were bearing the brunt of information security, with 78% believing that IT managers are primarily responsible for the organisation’s security.

FEAR OF PERSECUTION

Another worrying trend is that 65% of IT decision makers believed they would lose their job over a security breach.  This fear of persecution could potentially result in less honest individuals covering up critical information related to a breach.

Cyber crime is a global phenomenon that affects everyone, from individuals and employees to small and large organisations. No single standalone solution is sufficient to combat cyber crime. Expensive software alone is not enough to protect them from cyber threats. Cyber security technology is only effective when processes are in place to keep it that way and staff are trained to maintain the systems and processes.

ISO 27001 is the internationally recognised best-practice standard for cyber security. It forms the backbone of every intelligent cyber security risk management strategy. Implementing ISO 27001 will help you protect your information assets in cyber space, comply with your regulatory obligations, and thrive by assuring your customers and stakeholders that you are cyber secure.

The online survey was conducted from October 28, 2015 – November 11, 2015, among 501 U.S. adults age 18+.
