From 1 April 2016, hazardous waste producers in England will no longer be required to register their premises with the Environment Agency if they produce over 500kgs of hazardous waste in a year.
The unique consignment note number used on each individual hazardous waste consignment note will also change as a result. The government sees this as a deregulatory measure, reducing red tape for businesses and other organisations. You’ll no longer need to take the time to register or pay an annual fee for registration.
At the moment the unique consignment note number is made up of your premise registration code (in the format XYZ123) and a unique five character identifier (for example XYZ123/AB123). From 1 April the premise registration code will be replaced by the first six characters of your organisation name. For example, BLACKMORE RICOTECH’s new consignment note number will be BLACKM/AB123.
You’ll need to ensure that your site has a valid premises registration code up to and including 31st March 2016. From 1st April 2016 we’ll make the change to the consignment note codes on your behalf, unless you notify us before hand of your specific requirements.
If your site produces less than 500kgs of hazardous waste in a year, the only thing that changes is that from 1 April 2016 the EXEMPT code will no longer be used on consignment note codes. This will be replaced by the first six characters of your organisation name in line with all other producers.
The Government are also taking the opportunity to streamline the use of the standard industry classification (SIC) codes printed on each consignment note. These will change from being the 2003 to 2007 code versions. From 1st April 2016 we’ll make this change to the consignment notes on your behalf.
